Description

HARDBACK – A very good or better book, bound in the publisher’s patterned boards with bright gilt lettering to the spine. The boards are in lovely condition, free of any bumping to the corners, with just the mildest of fading to the spine. Internally, the pages are clean, with a neat book plate present to the front end-paper. There are a few foxing spots to the paste block also with associated light toning. The inner text is clean, free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. The dust wrapper is the correct UK first edition with the Daily Beast present to the upper front panel, which is in very good condition with chipping to the spine tips, also with minor loss to the corners of the front and rear flap folds. Shallow rubbing to the extremities with some small closed tears, but overall a clean, fresh dust wrapper with no fading to the orange spine. The correct printed price of 7/6net is present to the front lower flap, denoting a correct UK first edition printing. The first issue dust wrapper was quickly withdrawn by Chapman & Hall due to the threat of Court action from Lord Beaverbrook who was furious at the type setting of the Daily Beast, which had distinct similarities to his Daily Express mast head. The Daily Beast type set was immediately dropped from the books printing by Chapman & Hall to avoid such court actions, making the Daily Beast copies scarce to acquire.
