Description

HARDBACKS – ( London: Readers Union; George Allen & Unwin, 1960). First Editions Thus. Three volumes each bound in brown textured paper over boards (with a folding map at the rear of each volume) in grey dust wrappers (printed in purple). Pink top edge(s). Hammond: J R R Tolkien – A Descriptive Bibliography (1993) page 98. The very scarce first Book Club edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings produced for sale to the members of the Readers Union (which was not offered for sale to the General Public). The Fellowship of the Ring: Light foxing to the fore-edge otherwise a fine copy in like dust wrapper. The Two Towers: A tiny number of foxing spots to the fore-edge and to the early pages of the book otherwise a fine copy in like dust wrapper. The Return of the King: A tiny number of foxing spots to the fore-edge and to the early pages of the book otherwise a fine copy in like dust wrapper. This very scarce set is the first Book Club Edition of Tolkien’s trilogy with fewer than 3,000 copies produced. The trilogy was never reprinted in this edition. Hammond comments that this Book Club Edition was printed with the ninth? (partly corrected) impression of A5a. There are NO inscriptions and this is a particularly lovely set of all 3 volumes. Scarce especially in this condition. Each volume has the publisher’s printed price present to the lower front flap. Should you wish to see a full set of images regarding these titles, please refer to our website, as we are limited to only five images herewith.
