Description
HARDBACK – SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION – A very good book published by MacMillan & Co in 1890. This copy is the correct First Edition, second produced edition with the 20 colour illustrations by E Gertrude Thomson (collated as complete) which includes the tissue-guarded frontispiece. Correctly priced at ‘four shillings’ to the title page and Alice has her back to the reader on page 34 also with the Addendum slip (often missing) present to the rear of the book mentioning the publication of Sylvie And Bruno. The book’s boards are a little rubbed and soiled with a little rubbing to the edges and to the corners. Internally there is foxing to the tissue-guard, also to the two pages that protect the tissue-guard. There is the odd sporadic mark when flicking through the inner text, but overall a clean example considering the book’s age. Inscribed by the author to the half-title page. The inscription reads – MISS ALLEN / FROM THE AUTHOR / MAR. 25. 1890. There is light offsetting to the end papers, but overall a nice example of a very scarce author-inscribed Alice in Wonderland title. NB: The first printed edition of 10,000 copies, published by Macmillan in London in 1889, was rejected by Carroll, who objected to the colour printing. A First Edition second produced edition was printed by Macmillan and Co. in London in 1890 edition (as listed here) with some changes to the intensity of the illustrated plates.
